Park-and-ride lots provide commuters with an opportunity to carpool or take public transportation for at least a portion of their commute. The MBTA system is served by these facilities, which play a key role in attracting riders and reducing vehicle-miles traveled. Park-and-ride lots are especially appealing to commuters in suburban locations, which often have residential neighborhoods that are too far from stations for walking.

Park-and-ride lots are also maintained by other agencies, such as MassDOT and the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport). Many of these lots are used for ridesharing, and some are served by intercity or commuter bus. MassRIDES, MassDOT´s statewide travel-options program, provides information on ridesharing, vanpooling, and other alternatives to the single-occupant-vehicle commute.

Congestion Management Process (CMP) staff last monitored park-and-ride lots at MBTA stations between January 2009 and August 2010. Data on non-MBTA park-and-ride lots are gathered every few years from the agencies that operate them.
