The Access Advisory Committee to the MBTA (AACT)
The Access Advisory Committee to the MBTA (AACT) is a consumer organization with the mission of improving transit access and services for people with disabilities. Its membership is open to people with disabilities, senior citizens, and representatives of human services agencies. Members work closely with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to monitor compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and to improve the safety, efficiency, and accessibility of the MBTA system. AACT´s purview includes MBTA vehicles, stations, and other facilities, services, and operations.
AACT meets once a month to coordinate with MBTA officials and paratransit operators to identify accessibility problems in the system and to work on solutions. There are also presentations on timely topics and updates on ongoing MBTA and paratransit-vendor activities.
AACT members are volunteers and have attendance requirements to maintain eligibility to vote. Besides voting on policy issues and positions regarding MBTA services or facilities, members elect a Board of Directors. These officers represent the interests of AACT´s constituency on many MBTA committees and MBTA planning and design groups.
AACT meetings are open to the public and are usually held on the fourth Wednesday of each month, between 1:00 PM and 3:30 PM, at the State Transportation Building, 10 Park Plaza, in downtown Boston. Please visit upcoming or past meetings for more information.
Meetings are easily accessible by THE RIDE, a door-to-door service; by MBTA bus routes #43 and #55; or by taking the Silver Line to New England Medical Center Station. New England Medical Center Station and Chinatown Station, on the Orange Line, are also nearby, and are wheelchair-accessible. Boylston Station, on the Green Line, is nearby, but it is not wheelchair accessible.
Information is distributed in several formats, as required by the ADA, and upon request, AACT makes every effort to provide an American Sign Language interpreter at meetings.
To be placed on the mailing list, please phone Janie Guion, the AACT Coordinator, at 617-973-7507, or email AACT@ctps.org.
