| The Central
Transportation Planning Staff (CTPS) provides technical and
policy-analysis support to Boston Metropolitian Planning Organization
(MPO) and other members of the regions transportation community. Created
in 1974, CTPS was the result of an effort by several transportation
agencies to pool technical resources in a centralized planning staff.
In addition to being a cost-effective way to achieve high-quality, quick-response
planning expertise, CTPS was seen as a means of promoting cooperation
among agencies and consistency among planning efforts.
CTPS is a staff of highly trained professionals who perform transportation analyses for and provide information to a wide variety of organizations in both the public and private sectors. The staff is multidisciplinary and includes transportation analysts, planners, and engineers, as well as other professionals working in the areas of geographic information systems, cartography, graphic design, technical editing, computer systems operation, and administrative services. CTPS operates under the direction of the MPO. The seven member agencies and seven member municipalities of the MPO oversee the administration and the work program of CTPS. The work that CTPS performs falls into four major categories: travel modeling and forecasting; transportation planning and analysis; certification activities; and data, maps, and graphics. The work of this staff is supported by state-of-the-art computer hardware and software.
