Travel Modelers/Transportation Planner

 

The Central Transportation Planning Staff (CTPS) of the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is seeking qualified individuals to perform travel modeling. CTPS is conducting new household travel and transit onboard surveys in preparation for rebuilding its travel demand model set, and is also exploring the possibility of developing activity-based models. The model set is currently being used to examine a number of transportation projects, as well as significant land use and environmental issues, in eastern Massachusetts. In support of these efforts, CTPS is seeking to fill the two travel modeler positions described below.

 

SENIOR-LEVEL TRAVEL MODELER

 

This individual will assume a lead role in model development decision-making and task execution. This individual should have several years of successful, thoughtful experience in building and applying traditional trip-based travel models, and should be thoroughly adept at all the steps of the process. In addition, this person must have at least a sound working knowledge of, but preferably experience with, advanced modeling techniques, such as those related to activity-based modeling.  Experience with land use allocation models and traffic microsimulation is highly desirable.

 

Specific qualifications for this position are: 

 

·        Master’s degree in urban/regional planning or transportation/civil engineering. 

·        At least 10 years of work experience in transportation planning/engineering.

·        Thorough proficiency in either EMME or TransCAD.

·        Experience using discrete-choice model estimation software.

·        Experience and proficiency in inferential statistics.

·        Excellent communications skills.

·        Excellent leadership and other interpersonal skills.

 

TRAVEL MODELER/TRANSPORTATION PLANNER

 

This individual will be involved in a variety of assignments, including research, survey data collection and analysis, GIS analysis, database development, technical writing, and, of course, model development and application.  

 

Required  

·        Master’s degree in urban/regional planning or transportation/civil engineering. Alternatively, Master’s in geography or other relevant field, but with some course work in transportation planning and statistics. 

·        At least two years of work experience in transportation planning/engineering.

·        Some experience with or knowledge of travel modeling.

·        Familiarity with either EMME or TransCAD.

·        Strong computing, analytical, and communications skills.

·        Excellent interpersonal skills.

Desirable                               

·        Familiarity with ArcGIS, R, ALOGIT, Oracle.

·        Experience with or knowledge of travel survey methods.

  •   Experience manipulating U.S. Census data.

TRANSPORTATION PLANNER

CONGESTION MANAGEMENT PROCESS MANAGER

The Central Transportation Planning Staff (CTPS) of the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is seeking a qualified manager for its Congestion Management Process (CMP), the Mobility Management System (MMS).

Development of the MMS began in the mid-’90s and has been an ongoing process since then. The MMS monitors, analyzes, and makes recommendations on the following transportation elements: freeways, arterials, intersections, HOV lanes, transit, park-and-ride lots, bicycle parking spaces, transportation demand management, and pedestrian facilities. It also provides input to the development of the UPWP, the TIP, and the Regional Transportation Plan. A bachelor’s or higher-level degree in urban/regional or transportation planning or another, closely related field and three years of relevant experience are required.

The qualified candidate must also have:
  • Familiarity with the federal legislation on metropolitan transportation planning and CMP requirements
  • Direct or indirect experience with the development of a CMP
  • Experience in data collection and strong analytical skills
  • Proficiency in Excel, Access, GIS, and traffic engineering software
  • Excellent project-management, leadership, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to deliver effective presentations and prepare high-quality written products

Knowledge of the basics in web design is desirable.
