Mobility Challenges and Solutions

To determine long-range capital investment strategies and priorities for the 2008 PMT, the MBTA is in the process of identifying current mobility challenges faced by customers, as well as
near- and far-term anticipated travel needs. As an important element of this effort, the MBTA held a series of workshops to solicit public input. These focused on various travel corridors in the MBTA system and the mobility issues specific to the mix of services in each corridor, as well as across corridors. The MBTA is currently reviewing input received at the workshops and analyzing ridership trends and projections to identify the mobility problems that will be addressed in the 2008 PMT.

As mobility problems are being defined, the MBTA is also developing specific project proposals to resolve them. In some cases, these projects will bring existing equipment and infrastructure into a state of good repair or maintain them at that level. In other cases, the projects will enhance or expand the existing system to meet current and evolving mobility needs.
