Mobility Challenges and Solutions ⇒ Service Corridors

The MBTA rail network has evolved as a “hub-and-spoke” configuration: rapid transit, commuter rail, express bus, and boat services primarily move passengers between suburban areas and the urban core. Local bus service feeds into this network. Most MBTA commuters travel regularly on one “spoke” or corridor of the network.

Because of the radial nature of the system, mobility problems may be examined on a corridor-by-corridor basis. The current PMT has adopted this approach, but also recognizes the importance of how the corridors are interrelated and that travel needs can cut across corridors.
