Traffic counts have been collected since the dawn
of the automobile era, but traffic counts in electronic form generally
first appeared in the mid- to late 1960s. In limited cases,
earlier counts on paper have been converted into electronic form.
The MPO's warehoused electronic data spans from 1962
to the present, permitting valuable longitudinal studies to be
conducted. In general the MPO integrates new traffic counts for a
given year by May of the following year.
At some locations, traffic counts are collected on a continuous,
twenty-four-hours-per-day, seven-days-per-week basis. However,the
preponderance of traffic counts are collected over a fairly short span
of time (two or three days, or even one morning and evening rush hour
period). The collection may be repeated at intervals (a few years apart,
for example), but is often a one-time event at that particular
location.
These traffic count Web pages and data were
last updated in May 2006. The MPO does not warrant the accuracy of the
count data, which was collected by other agencies and is made
available on this Web site with their permission.
