Traffic counts can be collected almost anywhere,
in principle—in tunnels, on bridges, on superhighways, and on private
dirt roads. The location of traffic counts is at the discretion
of the collecting agency and the agency with legal jurisdiction over
the facility being measured.
Because the MPO warehouses primarily traffic counts conducted by the
Massachusetts Highway Department, the locations follow that agency's particular
needs. Most are on major state and federal highways, with
thorough coverage of interstate highways, but there are a number of
special counts conducted in geographically constrained regions to give
denser coverage. This accounts for the "lumpy" appearance of the
traffic count locations that appear in the interactive map.
These traffic count Web pages and data were
last updated in May 2006. The MPO does not warrant the accuracy of the
count data, which was collected by other agencies and is made
available on this Web site with their permission.
