This study focused on priority arterial segments in need of maintenance, modernization, and safety and mobility improvements. The arterial segments that were selected for study are: 1) Route 30 (Cochituate Road) in Framingham and Natick, and 2) Route 2 (Concord Turnpike/Cambridge Turnpike) in Concord and Lincoln. Two documents, one for each arterial segment, present the analyses and recommended improvements (see links below).
The study identified a number of problems in the two segments including safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists, inadequate accommodation of pedestrians and bicyclists, outdated traffic signal timing and phase plans, peak period traffic delays and queues, and access-management issues.
Working with representatives from MassDOT and the communities, MPO staff developed recommendations for increasing safety, improving access, and making traffic operations more efficient. If the recommendations are implemented, the result would be improved roadway corridors—roads that are modernized to accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists and to provide connections to nonmotorized facilities (trails and multiuse paths); that are safer for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists; and roads where traffic operates efficiently.
