Walking and bicycling trips play a vital role in the Boston region’s transportation network. Travel completed on foot, via bicycle, or with mobility assistance devices helps reduce congestion and emissions along our roadways. To ensure that current walking and bicycling habits continue and to encourage our region’s residents and visitors to choose such modes for future trips, it is important to create a safe and comfortable environment for walking and bicycling. Locations where there are high rates of crashes involving people walking or bicycling are a high priority for improvement in the Boston Region MPO area. This study analyzed three such intersections to identify safety issues and recommend improvements that would make walking and bicycling more comfortable and desirable modes of transportation at each location.
