This study is the latest of five similar studies that have been completed and have received favorable responses from municipal administrators and directors of departments of public works. As a result of these studies, municipalities in the region receive recommendations of potential low-cost solutions or a head start on the conceptual design for intersections in need of attention for safety improvements and congestion management.

The four intersections selected for this study had a history of high number of crashes and extensive congestion during peak periods. The four intersections studied were:

  • Route 37 (Franklin and Granite streets) at West Street in Braintree
  • North/South Franklin Street (Route 37) at Union Street/Plymouth Street (Route 139) in Holbrook
  • Western Avenue (Route 107) at Washington Street (Route 129) in Lynn
  • Lexington Street at Beaver Street in Waltham

MPO staff performed safety and operations analyses and developed recommendations for improving the selected intersections’ operations and the safety of drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians at these locations. The results of the four intersection studies were summarized in four memoranda, one for each municipality, and included intersection analyses and recommended improvements.
